Turn revision into a practice plan

Use evidence from your learning to decide what to study, ask and practise afloat next.

Our goal today

Create a specific action plan without treating quiz scores as proof of exam readiness.

What you’ll practise

  • Finding the misconception behind a wrong answer
  • Testing recall with changed scenarios
  • Connecting theory revision with practical feedback

Each question includes a custom diagram, the reasoning behind the answer, an explanation of the other choices and a follow-up exercise. Try the quiz first, or use the study view to read every answer.

01 / Learn

Separate knowledge, performance and evidence

Keep three lists: topics you can explain, practical tasks you can perform reliably and experience or documents that need checking. An online quiz can help with the first list. It cannot watch you handle a yacht or verify your qualifying passages.

02 / Learn

Make a gap specific

“Improve navigation” is broad. “Explain why my ETA changed in a tidal stream” is something you can practise and discuss. For a practical gap, ask an instructor to choose a suitable exercise and conditions. Add a date for reviewing the result rather than merely ticking off study time.

03 / Learn

Use a feedback loop

Try a quiz before rereading, note what you missed, revisit the explanation and try a fresh mixed-practice round later. Take persistent uncertainties to an instructor. Before booking an examination, separately review current prerequisites, supporting certificates and the training centre’s arrangements. A high practice score is useful feedback, not a readiness decision.

Your two-minute exercise

Create three actions: one topic to explain, one task to practise under instruction and one document to verify. Give each an owner or next contact and a review date.

Yachtmaster Exam Revision & Study Quiz

10 illustrated questions. Worked explanations and practical follow-ups for every answer.

Answer: Your answers to its knowledge questions

Why this answer works

A quiz observes answers, not real-world performance or documentary evidence.

Why the other choices fall short

A browser can compare an answer with an answer key; it cannot observe crosswind handling or verify the provenance of a logbook. Those require different evidence.

Put it into practice

For each study topic, name what you can test on paper and what needs observation aboard. Build both into your preparation instead of treating a score as a complete assessment.

Answer: Explain how the stream changed my ETA

Why this answer works

A specific outcome can be practised and reviewed.

Why the other choices fall short

Broad ambitions do not identify a task or a way to judge improvement. A specific explanation can be attempted, checked and repeated with a changed example.

Put it into practice

Write a goal with a verb: calculate, explain, identify or demonstrate. Add an example and a person or source that can check your reasoning.

You keep missing the same topic. What is useful next?

Answer: Review the reasoning and ask an instructor about remaining gaps

Why this answer works

Understanding the reason matters more than recognising an answer’s position.

Why the other choices fall short

Memorising option positions can improve a score without repairing the misconception. A high overall result can also hide a recurring weakness in one important topic.

Put it into practice

Write down the step that led you to the wrong choice. Return to the lesson, try a changed scenario and ask an instructor about any uncertainty that remains.

Answer: In suitable practical training with feedback

Why this answer works

Practical performance needs practice and observation in appropriate conditions.

Why the other choices fall short

Equipment ownership does not demonstrate skill, and another quiz cannot reproduce the boat's response or crew interaction. Practical feedback addresses the actual task.

Put it into practice

Choose a suitable training environment and agree an observable exercise with the instructor. Debrief the attempt before repeating it.

Answer: No; competence, experience and prerequisites still need assessment

Why this answer works

The school’s practice result is not an official assessment or eligibility check.

Why the other choices fall short

Speed and accuracy on these questions do not assess the full range of practical competence, experience or prerequisites. A perfect result is evidence about this practice attempt.

Put it into practice

Use the result to choose a more demanding application exercise. Keep exam eligibility checks and practical readiness discussions separate from quiz completion.

Answer: A specific task, next step and review point

Why this answer works

A concrete task and review point help turn intention into learning.

Why the other choices fall short

A certificate name describes the destination, and hours describe effort. Neither alone states what the next session should achieve or how you will know it helped.

Put it into practice

Write a task, the resources or supervision required and a review date. At the review, compare what you can now explain or do with the original gap.

You can repeat the formula for passage time but keep entering decimal hours as clock minutes. What practice best targets the error?
A clock with an unknown reading sits beside 2.25 hours, prompting a conversion into hours and minutes.

Answer: Work varied calculations and explicitly convert the fractional hour into minutes

Why this answer works

Target the specific step that fails: multiply the fractional hour by 60, then add it to the clock time. Explain each step and check a different example later to see whether the method sticks.

Why the other choices fall short

Repeating a formula leaves the conversion mistake untouched. Avoiding the topic or memorising one example gives you no evidence that you can handle a new time value.

Put it into practice

Convert 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 hours to 15, 30 and 45 minutes. Then work a passage problem with a different departure time and check the clock arithmetic separately.

You answer a familiar quiz correctly immediately after reading its explanation. What is a stronger next check of understanding?

Answer: Try a changed scenario later and explain the reasoning without the answer in view

Why this answer works

Immediate recognition can reflect memory of the answer. A delayed, varied scenario asks whether you can retrieve and apply the underlying idea, while practical skills still need supervised practice afloat.

Why the other choices fall short

Immediate repetition can draw on recognition of the displayed answer. Fixed option order is another cue that disappears when the scenario changes.

Put it into practice

Put the explanation away and return later with different numbers or conditions. Say why the rule applies before looking at the available answers.

Your practice record says only “improve navigation”. Which replacement makes the next session easier to assess?

Answer: Plan an approach, explain two independent checks and review the attempt with an instructor

Why this answer works

Define a task, an observable standard and a feedback step. That turns a vague ambition into evidence of progress without claiming that a quiz alone establishes exam readiness.

Why the other choices fall short

A deadline for perfection is not an assessment criterion. Faster clicking and easy reading also avoid the particular navigation decisions you need to practise.

Put it into practice

Specify the approach, the two checks you intend to use and the feedback you want. Record what the instructor observed and turn that into the following session's task.

Your last three quiz scores improved, but you cannot explain why a tidal calculation uses a particular datum. What should your next revision session target?
An improving-score card and study book highlight a remaining question about tidal datum.
A score and a remaining gapIllustrative · not to scale · tap to enlarge ↗
Read the answer and explanation

Answer: The datum concept and a worked example explained without answer choices

Why this answer works

A rising score is useful feedback, but it does not remove a specific conceptual gap. Work on what the datum represents, how the sources relate to it and how that affects a complete calculation.

Why the other choices fall short

Fast recognition can coexist with weak understanding. Excluding the topic or using the average as an eligibility decision avoids the particular uncertainty you have identified.

Put it into practice

Draw the reference level, sounding and water surface. Explain the calculation to someone else and ask them to challenge any assumption you have left unstated.
