A specialist guide from YouSail
Australian sailing. A little more connected.

A course prepares you. An exam qualifies you. Yachtmaster is earned through demonstrated competence.
Understand the differenceStart where you are
You don’t need to read everything.
Choose the starting point that fits.
Learn to crew, then work towards skippering short passages. Yachtmaster can be the longer-term goal; your next step is a foundation course and regular sailing.
Review your logbook for days at sea, skipper time, night hours and qualifying passages. Then compare Coastal and Offshore to work out what you still need.
Check your paperwork with a recognised training centre, practise the manoeuvres you find difficult, and make time for navigation and night pilotage.
A little structure for a big ambition
Keep a checklist for Coastal, Offshore or Ocean, and take your next steps to a sailing school.
Choose your horizon
Start with the sailing you want to do.
Then work back to the experience you need.

The bigger picture
There is no substitute for making decisions on the water. Training gives you a foundation; repeated practice turns it into judgement.

Yachtmaster is a Certificate of Competence earned through an exam. A preparation course helps you practise and build confidence, but you’ll need to pass the exam to earn the certificate. Theory courses and earlier practical courses serve different purposes.
No. The pathway is a useful learning sequence, not a requirement to buy every course. Experienced sailors can enter at the appropriate level if they meet the exam prerequisites and can demonstrate the required skills. Tell a recognised training centre about the sailing you’ve done, and ask where to start.
Start with our school selection guide and the YouSail school directory. Confirm that the centre is currently recognised by the RYA for the training you need and can arrange your exam.
Commercial work has additional requirements. The vessel, operating area, flag and role determine which endorsements or separate qualifications apply. Read the commercial pathway guide before choosing a career programme.
