The Gold Coast's sailing water is the Broadwater, a long sheltered lagoon behind South Stradbroke Island, fed by the Coomera and Nerang rivers and connected to the ocean by the Gold Coast Seaway, a trained entrance between two rock walls. Inside, marinas, canals and shallow sand flats; outside, the Pacific and the passage south across the border to New South Wales or north to Moreton Bay. The Seaway is usually straightforward and always worth respecting: an easterly swell against the ebb builds standing waves at its mouth, and the sand bypass system and the bar-like shoals to seaward move. The Broadwater's channels to Moreton Bay are shallow and tide-dependent and provide a pilotage lesson in themselves.

The ocean coast
Point Danger and the border to the south, the passage north to the Moreton Bay entrances. Open coast with swell and the East Australian Current close inshore.
Training here
The Broadwater suits sheltered courses and marina boat handling; the Seaway teaches entrance planning; the inside passage north teaches tidal pilotage. Longer passages run to Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast and south to Coffs Harbour.

Is the Gold Coast Seaway a bar?
It is a trained, dredged entrance rather than a natural bar, but shoals to seaward and the ebb against swell produce breaking seas in the wrong conditions. Treat it with bar-crossing discipline: flood tide, small swell, bar report first.
